Durango CO - The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado announced that it will receive $57,809 in Economic Adjustment Assistance funds from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Economic Development Administration (EDA) to aid in economic recovery efforts in San Juan County and to hire a recovery coordinator to assist local businesses.
The Silverton community is expected to undergo tremendous changes as a result of the Gold King Mine spill and impending Super Fund designation.
"At EDA, we work hard to arm regions across the nation with the tools needed to be successful in their respective efforts - one way we do that is through grant funding," said U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Jay Williams. "This economic adjustment assistance grant will place Region 9 on the road to recovery by helping sustain local businesses and infrastructure during the rehabilitation efforts."
San Juan County, the Town of Silverton, Silverton School District and Region 9 will match EDA's funding which will help support resiliency efforts to assist businesses to successfully remain open and navigate the community's transition from the Gold King Mine Spill disaster to a long-term Superfund cleanup.
"This EDA funding will allow us to develop a resiliency and diversification plan for businesses," said Ed Morlan, Executive Director of Region 9. "It also works to revitalize San Juan Development Association to assist the community into the future."
